Underground mining advances in the dark, with no sky and no satellite signal — so every metre of development depends on survey control carried down from surface and pushed forward through the workings. Survey House provides that control: orienting the underground network, directing development, and recording the infrastructure that follows.

Development is about direction. Headings, declines, tunnels and ore passes are driven on bearings established by gyro observation and carried forward through the workings, so that headings hole through to one another correctly and safely — the wrong bearing means a mis-holing, which costs money and can cost lives. Raise-bore alignment, decline gradient control and development as-builts all sit within this work.

Infrastructure is about record and tolerance. Shaft stations, conveyor and rail, pump chambers, workshops and tips are set out from the underground control and then captured as as-builts; 3D laser scanning records the openings, measures convergence as ground closes under stress, and compares the as-built profile against design.

It is a sector built from several of our disciplines — gyroscopic orientation, raise-bore alignment, 3D scanning and independent check surveys — delivered as one coordinated underground programme.

How it's done

Method, verification and limitations

Control is transferred from surface, then extended underground as a closed traverse network. Closure is what makes the network trustworthy — an open traverse can be internally consistent and still be substantially wrong.

Where a shaft provides the only route down, orientation is established by correlation survey or gyroscopic observation. Both are checked independently.

Underground conditions degrade observation quality: heat, humidity, dust, ventilation-induced refraction and limited sight distances all reduce achievable accuracy compared with surface work.

What is underground mine surveying?

It is the survey control that directs underground development and records the workings — carrying accurate position and bearing down from surface and forward through the headings, so the mine is developed in the right place, on the right line, and safely.

How is direction controlled underground without GPS?

By gyro-theodolite observation, which determines true north independently of satellites or magnetism. That bearing is carried forward through the workings and checked, so headings drive on the correct line and hole through to one another safely.

What is a holing, and why does it matter?

A holing is where two underground headings (or a heading and a shaft) meet. If the survey control is off they miss — a mis-holing — which is expensive to rectify and a serious safety risk. Correct orientation and check surveys prevent it.

How often should underground control be checked?

Regularly, and always after any event that could have disturbed stations — ground movement, blasting near a station, or rehabilitation work. Control is not permanent, and stations can move without any visible sign.

Project scope and practical considerations

Planning around underground development

An underground survey appointment needs to fit the development programme. Identify the working areas, available access windows, existing stations and the design information to be used. Separate routine development support from a specific independent check: the personnel, observations and reporting required may differ.

Where headings, crosscuts or infrastructure connect, agree which coordinate records govern the work and how discrepancies will be referred back to the project team. Access and production constraints should be included in the brief rather than left to mobilisation.

Control, progress and the handover record

Useful records distinguish the control used, the features observed and the date of each measurement. Development positions and as-built information should be linked to the drawing revision or planning reference against which they will be assessed.

If control has been disturbed or records have been inherited from another contractor, allow for verification before relying on them. A change in survey provider does not by itself establish that earlier positions are correct.

Choosing the right related appointment

An underground survey measures positions within the workings. A gyroscopic survey addresses orientation; a shaft survey addresses the transfer and alignment requirements associated with the shaft. Define those interfaces explicitly where more than one specialist method is needed.
