A stockpile survey records the accessible pile geometry and calculates volume against an agreed base. The quality of the result depends on the surface observations and on how the base, perimeter and exclusions are defined.

How it's done

Method, verification and limitations

The pile extent, base reference and reporting purpose are agreed first. Surface observations are collected using a method suited to the site, visibility and access. The calculation then relates the observed surface to the defined base within the agreed boundary.

Material movements during capture can affect what the observation set represents. Record relevant activity and coordinate timing with the site team. Where part of the surface or base cannot be observed, the calculation assumptions need to be identified.

Stockpile Surveys — frequently asked questions

Can a stockpile survey provide tonnage?

It provides measured volume. A mass estimate can be derived using an appropriate density, but that density and its source must be supplied or established separately and documented. The survey alone does not measure material density.

Must the stockpile be measured by drone?

No. The method depends on access, visibility, operating constraints and the required output. Aerial capture and ground observations are options to assess against the site rather than universal requirements.

Can monthly stockpile results be compared?

Yes, when the reference surfaces, pile boundaries, identifiers and reporting dates are compatible. Changes in material during capture or differences in assumptions should be considered when interpreting the comparison.

Project scope and practical considerations

The base surface matters

The ground beneath a pile is usually not visible during a stockpile survey. A previous yard survey or other agreed reference can provide the base; where that information is absent, the approach and limitations must be agreed before relying on the result.

Changing the base assumption can change the calculated volume without any change to the observed pile surface. Keep the reference and version with the quantity report.

Repeat measurements and tonnage

For recurring reporting, use consistent pile identifiers, boundaries and dates. Reconciliation with production records should account for movements between the survey time and the reporting cutoff.

Survey volume is not tonnage. A mass estimate requires appropriate density information for the material and its condition. The source of that information and the derived nature of the estimate should remain visible in the report.
