Raise boring excavates a circular shaft or hole between two levels without blasting: a machine on the upper level drills a small pilot hole down to a target, then pulls a large reaming head back up to open it to full diameter. The entire result hinges on the accuracy of the pilot hole — and that is a survey-critical task.

Pilot-hole accuracy faces two deviation modes. Corkscrew (spiralling) deviation leaves undulations in the final bored wall that eat into conveyance clearances, while directional deviation is driven by rock structure. Method, verification and limitations

The critical measurement is not the collar setup but the relationship between the two levels. Both positions may be individually correct within their own survey networks and still be wrong relative to each other.

This is why the between-level check is the work that matters. It verifies the two levels against a common reference rather than accepting each level’s own control at face value.

Survey confirms alignment at setup and target position on the level below. Deviation during drilling is a function of the drilling operation and ground conditions.

Why is survey so important to raise boring?

Because the bored result is governed by the pilot hole. If the pilot deviates, the finished raise can be off-position or have wall undulations that reduce conveyance clearance. Catching deviation during piloting — before reaming — avoids very costly rework.

What causes a raise-bore pilot hole to deviate?

Two main modes: corkscrew deviation (spiralling of the bit), which undulates the wall, and directional deviation caused by rock structure. Alignment survey and directional monitoring manage both.

How is pilot-hole direction checked?

Through accurate collar setting-out, a verticality reference and gyroscopic directional checks that provide feedback during drilling, allowing adjustments before the reaming phase.

Can survey correct a hole that has already deviated?

No. Survey establishes and verifies position; it does not steer the drill. What survey can do is confirm the breakthrough position accurately so the consequences are known rather than assumed.

Planning your appointment

Project scope and practical considerations

Define the planned alignment and references

A raise-bore alignment appointment should identify the approved design line, the relevant collar and target information and the control to be used. Provide the latest drawings and establish who owns the design coordinates before mobilisation.

Where information comes from different contractors or survey records, allow time to reconcile reference systems and identifiers. A matching point name does not establish that two coordinate records are compatible.

Survey work within the project sequence

Agree the measurements needed before setup, during the relevant project stages and at handover. Access constraints and the availability of reference points can influence what can be checked and when.

The planned alignment, the setup check and any measurement of the actual bore trajectory are different records. Do not assume that commissioning one automatically includes all three; state the required scope in the appointment.

Verification and reporting

Specify the reporting format, independent checks and process for handling an observed discrepancy. Tolerances must come from the project requirements and be related to the measured feature. They should not be borrowed from an unrelated raise or treated as a universal instrument capability.
