The current design and reference-system information are reviewed before the field work. Relevant site control is assessed and the required positions or levels are transferred using an approach suited to the site and the project requirements.

Checks, marking conventions and records are agreed as part of the scope. Where design information conflicts with site conditions or control, the discrepancy should be resolved through the responsible project team rather than silently accommodated.

What must we supply before setting-out starts?

Provide the current approved drawings, relevant design coordinates or levels, site-control information, required construction stages and the programme. Identify who can authorise changes or resolve discrepancies.

Does setting-out include an as-built survey?

Not automatically. Setting-out transfers the design to site; an as-built survey records the constructed result. Both can be included in a coordinated appointment, with their timing and deliverables specified separately.

Can disturbed setting-out marks be replaced?

Yes, subject to access and suitable reference information. The team needs to know which marks have been disturbed and whether the design has changed before re-establishing them.

Drawing revisions and site changes

Identify the person authorised to issue construction information. Changes received after setting-out may require a revised visit or new marks; retaining the drawing revision with the record helps the project team identify what each set of references represents.

Where subcontractors work from different files, reconcile the reference systems and drawing versions before transferring positions to site. A design change should be traceable through the survey instruction and handover.

Protecting marks and planning attendance

Marks can be disturbed by excavation, traffic and subsequent work. Agree how they will be protected and when replacements or independent checks will be required. Witness marks and offsets can help preserve usable references where direct marks are vulnerable.

Provide the construction sequence so attendance can be planned around access and hold points. Continuous survey support and occasional milestone visits are different appointments.
